Our Heritage
A Legacy of Craftsmanship Since 1971
The Foundation (1971–1998)
The story of Energy Plus Home Improvements began in 1971 when Jim Kress co-founded Superior Interiors. Driven by a commitment to quality, Jim eventually established Kress Drywall in 1973. By 1987, the company had grown into one of the largest drywall contractors in Michigan, employing over 70 craftsmen. In 1985, Jim re-branded as Kress & Sons Drywall, Inc. to bring his three sons into the family trade, teaching them the values of hard work and "doing it right the first time."
Evolution & Adaptation (1999–2012)
In 1999, Jim Kress passed the torch to his middle son, Chris Kress. Chris revived the Superior Interiors name and immediately began a trajectory of growth and diversification.
2002
Chris made a significant investment into the company, adding full-service insulation capabilities, including spray foam, cellulose, and injection foam.
2008:
When the housing market crashed and builders disappeared, Chris pivoted the business model to serve restoration companies.
The Pivot:
By leveraging their full residential building licenses, the team began handling total exterior and structural reconstructions—windows, trusses, and more—simplifying the process for clients by providing a single point of contact for complex jobs.
The Birth of Energy Plus (2013–Present)
As the company moved deeper into roofing, siding, and exterior remodeling, it became clear that the name "Superior Interiors" no longer reflected the full scope of their expertise.
2013–2014:
Chris founded Energy Plus Home Improvements. After seeing the success of this new direction, the family fully transitioned to the new name in 2014, officially dissolving the old entity to focus on a "whole-home" improvement philosophy.
2021–2023:
Despite the challenges of the 2019 pandemic, Energy Plus continued to invest in the community. We restored a historic building in Chris's hometown of Riverdale, MI, creating a local shop and showroom, and expanded again in 2023 to better serve our Mid-Michigan neighbors.
